Passport Fingerprint Verification

Passport Fingerprint Verification. The Directorate General of Immigration and Passports has launched an improved online biometric verification system to resolve fingerprint verification issues faced by passport applicants. The upgrade is aimed at making the online passport process smoother, faster, and more reliable, especially for overseas Pakistanis and senior citizens.

For a long time, many applicants reported technical problems during online biometric verification. Fingerprint scans often failed, causing delays and repeated application attempts. To address this issue, the Passports Department has now integrated NADRA’s Pak-ID mobile app into the passport application system.

Under the new setup, applicants can verify their fingerprints directly through the Pak-ID app. If fingerprint scanning does not work, a facial verification option is also available. This ensures that applicants are not blocked due to biometric limitations and can complete their applications without visiting passport offices.

DG Passports Mustafa Jamal Qazi stated that overseas Pakistanis were among the most affected by online biometric errors. He said the new system was introduced after reviewing user complaints and is expected to provide major relief to applicants living abroad. Senior citizens, who often face difficulties with fingerprint scans, are also expected to benefit from this facility.

Officials say the update is part of a wider digital transformation plan. The department aims to reduce in-person visits, minimise processing delays, and improve access to passport services through modern technology. More digital features are expected to be added in the future to further improve user experience.

Step-by-Step Process for Online Biometric Verification

Overseas applicants using the DGIP e-Services portal must now complete biometric verification through the NADRA Pak-ID app. The process begins by starting an online passport application on the DGIP portal. At the biometric stage, the system generates a Passport Tracking ID, which the applicant must note.

Next, the applicant opens the Pak-ID mobile app and selects the online passport option. The CNIC number and Tracking ID are entered to link the passport application. Using the app’s camera-based tool, the applicant captures and submits fingerprint data. If fingerprints cannot be verified, facial verification can be used as an alternative.

Once biometric verification is completed successfully, the DGIP system updates automatically. This allows the applicant to proceed with fee payment and final submission of the passport application.

Why the New System Matters

The new biometric verification system is expected to significantly reduce application failures and delays. By offering both fingerprint and facial verification options, the Passports Department has added flexibility to the online process. This move makes passport services more accessible for Pakistanis living abroad and supports the government’s broader push toward digital public services.

Officials believe the upgrade will improve trust in online passport services and encourage more applicants to use digital channels instead of visiting offices in person.
